Do you: have bunions? have hammertoes? have plantar fasciitis or heel spurs? have a neuroma? have knee or hip pain? have chronic ankle sprains? have arthritis? play sports? stand all day?
Not all orthotics are made the same. I have Custom Sole Support Othotics in my shoes and I love them . Over the last few years, I have researched several different kinds of shoe inserts: There are the "custom" made ones from Foot Levelers, which I sold in my office for a couple of years; there are generic ones from sporting good stores that cost about $40; there are expensive generic ones from Good Feet, the commercials you see on TV. I didn't see much of a difference between the "custom" made ones and the "generic" ones until I was fitted for the Sole Supports custom orthotic. In August 2006, I went to the Sole Supports workshop, given by the owner of the company, Dr. Ed Glaser, Podiatrist, that there are regular shoe inserts that do an OK job of helping people with structural support, and there are also really great orthotics that change the structure of the foot when they are worn.
"Why bother, I don't have feet problems?” you ask. Well, most of you reading this now have seen me as a patient before and probably have had hip, low back, knee or ankle problems. "How are they connected?” you wonder. Think about it, the feet are the support system for your entire body. If your 'walking gate' is off balance, your entire body will be off balance. That's why some people have chronic symptoms like bunions, ankle, knee, hip pain, and muscle spasms.
Not sure if you need orthotics? Take a look at the checklist above and read the Sole Supports website . I encourage everyone to research any product before they buy it, even ones that I endorse. Then call me. We can custom fit you in the office in 15 minutes and you can have a pair of truly custom made orthotics in no time.

The Body Keeps the Score is a must read for anyone who has been through trauma or wants to understand the origins and manifestations of trauma. In a well-researched and accessible way, Dr. van der Kolk has created a foundation of breaking down what happens in the brain and the body due to traumatic events and how to heel those wounds. By ackowledging PTSD can happen in childhood or adulthood, he gives a voice to those who may feel that they are stuck in their healing because traditional psychology cannot help them.
